  17. <p>     The Green Hat--Michael Arlen. Many think of Michael Arlen's
  18. writing as "a delicious sewer." Others feel that he strains
  19. palpably at cleverness. Neither criticism is wholly just.
  20. Arlen's "decadence" need hardly be called sewerish for it is
  21. quite sincere, never vulgar, anything but reprehensible to fair
  22. minds. Arlen's "cleverness" is indisputable, save by the very
  23. dull; and it is beside the point that his people are wholly
  24. impossible as well as wholly charming. They are created by a
  25. sensitive person possessed of a gorgeous sense of the
  26. ridiculous, a rare way with words, and a perception half
  27. dissolute, half profound.

  29. <p>     As one might imagine, Michael Arlen is no Englishman. He
  30. plays, dines, dances and drinks with the blither young spirits
  31. of Mayfair--the social "Mugs" as he has called them. But he is
  32. not of them. Born on the Danube, in Bulgaria, of Armenian
  33. parents, he was taken to Manchester, as an infant, educated in
  34. schools of the "plebs" and in Switzerland. He became a
  35. journalist in London, knew poverty and loneliness.</p>
